At Atwell College, our Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) is designed to challenge students academically and build on their self-management and reflection skills, developing well rounded independent learners. The college offers Academic Enrichment classes in Years 7, 8 and 9 in the four core learning areas - English, HASS, Mathematics and Science.
Students are delivered the WA curriculum with extra time spent focusing on extending students in any of the following ways:
- Extracurricular competitions
- Accelerated curriculum schedule to get a head start on future concepts
- Engaging in fun and challenging activities specific to the class and staff member
- Learning vital study techniques and patterns that will become crucial to success in senior school classes
- Being exposed to personal reflection times encouraging self-appreciation and acknowledgement and development of individual strengths
- Working effectively in groups and have a better understanding of how we contribute to the learning of others
- Self and peer evaluations
- Developing a better sense of self-efficacy and differentiation
To encourage a well-rounded, self-managed and independent learner, we begin by helping students to look at themselves and learn to identify their strengths. All students in the AEP program are encouraged to look inwards and reflect on what they have learned during learning activities. In doing so, students develop their self-reflection processes as a natural part of education. With a better understanding of ourselves and an appreciation of others and their learning, we can work more effectively in teams. Working with like-minded people in a challenging environment can be lots of fun.
AEP places will be reviewed at the end of every semester, providing the opportunity for students to move in and out of the program based on their results and commitment to the program.
